International Cookery Group

This year we are introducing a new cookery class for parents. Each week a parent (or group of parents) will demonstrate how to cook a traditional meal from their home country. We have families from all around the world attending the school and we are looking forward to sampling many new and delicious dishes. It will be an informal class and everyone is welcome to attend (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles etc!). If you are interested in taking part in the class please come to a meeting next Wednesday 30th September at 9.15 am in the kitchen. Tea/coffee will be provided.

Oil Painting with Brendan

Brendan, our Artist in Residence, has very kindly offered to continue the art class for parents this year. It was a great success last year and the group exhibited their wonderful paintings in the school. All parents are welcome to attend and Brendan would like to stress that no experience is necessary and that the only requirement is an enthusiasm for learning a new skill. The class is for everyone, especially those who think that they can’t paint! The classes will be free of charge and all materials will be supplied. The proposed time for the classes is Thursday mornings at 9.15 starting Thursday 24th September. Tea/coffee will be provided and we hope the classes will also provide an opportunity to socialise with other parents in a relaxed and informal setting.

If you would like to participate in the class, or just try it out, please come to the kitchen next Thursday morning. Contact Orlaith on 086/3510106 for more information. We look forward to seeing many of you there.

Home School Community Liaison (HSCL)

Welcome to the HSCL section of our School Website. Our HSCL Co-ordinator is Orlaith Regan. Orlaith is the link between the school, the home and the community. She looks for ways to support parents and help them to remain involved in their child’s school life. Orlaith is also here to help in the transition from Primary to Secondary School and to explain or answer the questions that parents don’t always feel they can ask. She is on hand to give parents advice where possible and to listen to parents when school related problems arise.

In addition, HSCL organises classes for parents and encourages them to attend. Courses include Computers, Incredible Years, Art, Maths for Parents, Cookery, etc.. Such courses not only help parents develop new skills, but also recognise the importance of parents having time to themselves. It also gives them the opportunity to share in the life and work of the school alongside their children.

Orlaith also organises many parent/child programmes during the year including Maths 4 Fun, Shared Reading, Science for Fun and Cookery, where parents work alongside their children in the classroom. Details of these programmes are communicated to parents throughout the year.

The scheme is not confined to within the school walls. The scheme builds bridges between the school and the many groups, organizations and agencies within the wider community. Such links include Local Family Resource Centres, Youth Services, School Completion Programme, An Garda Siochana, Local Adult Literacy Centre, School Welfare Officer and many others.

Remember, the HSCL Scheme is there for the benefit of you and your children, its success depends in large part on your input! So, if you have any ideas, concerns, opinions or requests, share them with us.

All parents are welcome to meet with Orlaith in school or in their own home and she can be contacted during school hours on 086 3510106 or at orlaithregan@hotmail.com.
