Junior Classes Explore Problem-Solving with Origami

As part of our new STEM programme, the junior classes have been busy learning through folds, shapes, and creativity! This week, the children were introduced to origami – the Japanese art of paper folding – and discovered how it can be used to solve problems and explore mathematical ideas.

The pupils worked in small groups, following step-by-step instructions to create different shapes. Along the way, they practised skills such as:

  • Following sequences and instructions

  • Recognising shapes and symmetry

  • Thinking logically and working together

There were plenty of “lightbulb moments” as the children realised how a single sheet of paper could be transformed into something completely new with just a few careful folds. The activity not only encouraged teamwork and resilience, but also highlighted the fun side of maths, engineering, and problem-solving.

Our STEM programme is designed to build curiosity and confidence from the very beginning of primary school. Origami was a wonderful way for our youngest learners to see how creativity and problem-solving go hand in hand.
